smoggie Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 Anyone had any problems with the GPS receiver due to having a heated front screen? Did you have to get bluetooth version and place it elsewhere or was it ok ? CheersSmoggie Quote
johnb80 Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 My installed Clarion system has it's attena near the tax disc holder, I have also used HP PDA with TomTom 3 blue tooth and had no problems due to the Heated Screen. Regards - John Quote
HJT Posted July 27, 2005 Report Posted July 27, 2005 Running Tomtom on a PDA with a compact flash receiver and have no problems with reception anywhere on the screen. There is no change in reception when I bring the PDA outside the car. so you should be fine. Howard Quote

Guest MATT Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 i also have no problem receiving a signal through a heated screen. MATT Quote
Ivor Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 I have a Garmin Streetpilot and have no problem with the heated screen. Quote
smoggie Posted July 29, 2005 Author Report Posted July 29, 2005 Right seems like a consensus to me.Infomap Navigator and GPS ordered. Old laptop at the ready.I'll let everyone know (probably in the customisation section would be best) how I get on  CheersSmoggie. Quote
Guest stawarz Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 My old Garmin eTrek works fine when on the dash. However when in a Renault hire car now that's another matter (damn coated heat reflective windscreens), have to resort to using a re-radiating antenna. Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 Ah - When i first bought my navman, i was in the conservatory, playing/messing with it. It would NOT get a signal through the 'heat proof' glass, but step out side, and you get full signal. Strange how mobile phone signals get through though. MATT Quote
italiastar Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 Infomap Navigator and GPS ordered. Old laptop at the ready.I'll let everyone know (probably in the customisation section would be best) how I get on Sorry to be dim - are you using the laptop as the display for the GPS? I also read about gps not working through heated screens - I thought that if the reciever was positioned right at the edge where there isn't any "wires" , the GPS might work - you guys have answered the question - I just need the money to afford one - after being fleeced by two dealers in a row! Quote
SharanTDICarat Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 I am using a Garmin Quest with no problems with the heated screen.TAM Quote
italiastar Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 That's good news - my wife has just asked - does it work with the heated screen on? She's also pointed out that if we had sat nav, we'd have to find something else to argue about - also does the sat nav display automatically turn round to point in the direction your going in? Quote
Phil Neal Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 i run a laptop with a usb GPS mouse, I use Via Michelin software but am thinking of moving to infomap (so gatso's and stuff can be added). Autoroute 2005 works ok but doesn't have voice, it's just like a map that shows where you are and which way you are pointing and a line to follow, i've got a file with the entire caravan club and camping and caravaning club site lists which is handy! Route 66 I didn't get on with at all. The via michelin software is very good and does rotate to match direction, it's 3d also so what you see on the screen you see on the road (like tomtom but on a 14" screen!), the 2 problems with the michelin software are the inability to set way points or stops in the journey, and it doesn't have the m6 toll road on! total cost of converting my laptop to navigation? Guest chrisH Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 I've just bought an 8" TFT screen with TV Quote
Phil Neal Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 i was toying with getting the tv version, shame they don't do a tv version with a touch screen  i can see next months car allowance getting stung for all sorts of odds and ends... Quote
HJT Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 also does the sat nav display automatically turn round to point in the direction your going in? Yes, Tomtom does and I believe most others do. You would be amazed how useful they are and how relaxed you can be about making a journey to somewhere you don't know. Howard Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 Even if you take a wrong turn, or miss a turning, most will automatically re-route, to get you back on track. it also shows you up-coming junctions, roundabouts and so on, giving you an early idea of the layout, of the upcoming junction, its great when your travelling. MATT Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted July 30, 2005 Report Posted July 30, 2005 its great when your travelling. MATT I would think it would get quite boreing after a while just sitting in your front room staring at the screen while it does nothing  so I would imagine the moving around with it would add an exciting element to it! Quote
Guest MATT Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 Oh - very funny  - i meant when your driving in a place you have never been. but yes it is more exciting when your moving, than standing still, as It EVEN SPEAKS to you! and after listening to it for a few hours, you go in a shop and you speak like it - A robot! can, i, have, a, quarter, pounder, with, cheese, meal, and, coke, please.Estimated, arrival, in, one, minute, and, five, seconds. Mine has even started back seat driving! i was driving somewhere (as you do) when it said 'Slow, bend,...ahead' and there was a sharp right hand bend. MATT Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 I've been meaning to buy some form of sat nav for a while now and I finally did! an hour before we went on holiday <_< still, plenty of time to RFM and see how it all works  got a TOMTOM GO 500, :D nice bit of kit! does exactly as it says on the box :P only problem was that it didnt get a signal till an hour + into the trip to Cornwall, I knew the route I wanted to take and when it came on line it had another route in mind :P so for a while all it wanted me to do was a U turn and back track to it's choosen route in the end I won and it took the route I choose :D still once it got round to my way of thinking it worked a treat :D Quote
smoggie Posted August 3, 2005 Author Report Posted August 3, 2005 So its up and running - no problems what so ever worked a treat first time.Big thumbs up to Infomaps Navigator [once you get the hang of it :P ] Just got to find a way of installing the laptop in a neat / tidy / safe way so thanks for all the replies Cheers Smoggie. Phil Neal Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 there are some really cool mounts available in the states, they bolt to the seat mounting bolts and give you a tray to strap the laptop to that you can swing out of the way, look a bit tricky to have a front seat passenger though:) Thats why i plan on the touchscreen, can tuck laptop (and inverter!) under passenger seat, small usb hub for screen, gps and extra keyboard / touchpad mouse if required, ta da! portable incar computer/mp3/dvd/tv etc Quote
bosshogg_hgte Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 I know the thread has moved on but going back to the first point about heated screens, if nobody else has a problem then why do i?First used TomTom V3 with wired gps receiver. Could not get a bloody signal anywhere in the car. Eventualy jammed it it the rear window which damaged the trim but got us there. Now i invested(grabbed before it hit the ground as the lorry pulled away) in TomTom V5 on a ipaq with Blootooth receiver. This has great trouble getting a signal through the screen but push it to the side over the vent and it gets a great signal. Although it is supposed to work on batteries, it gets a better signal whilst plugged into the lighter socket (which negates the point of the bluetooth not having wires!) So why do i have trouble then.Hope it shows a bit more information for you Quote
